When out grocery shopping, it is important to stay safe and alert during Covid-19. Covid-19 has changed all our lives in more ways than one would imagine. Keeping the mask on at all times is probably the biggest change we’ve quickly imbibed in our daily lives. Every time you step out of the house for grocery shopping or run other errands during Covid-19, you are at risk of contracting the disease. Here are some quick tips to keep in mind and practice to stay safe and healthy.
Maintain distance
Your biggest risk of contraction is from other people who may be releasing virus laden droplets when they sneeze, talk, cough or breathe too close to you. While the mask works more for the protection of those around you than your own, it is a good practise to have a soft barrier that helps filter what you inhale to some extent.
Sanitize
High touch surfaces like door handles, card payment machines, shopping baskets, etc. may be your second biggest risk. Sanitize your hands before and after touching them not only after. Doing so will help others around you stay safe too. Practising good hand hygiene is absolutely the most vital step in staying safe. Wash your hands thoroughly when you get home.
Leave your phone alone

What is wet and dry waste? How do you segregate and manage waste? These are important questions you should be asking if you don’t already know. At Protech we take our responsibility towards the environment seriously and have wet and dry waste bins at our residential projects. Here’s a quick guide to waste management.
Your mantra should be ‘want not, waste not’. Luckily, growing up in an average Indian household we all have hands on experience in reduced consumption, reusing and upcycling whatever we bring into our homes. This will go a long way in helping us reduce toxic waste that takes a long time to decompose.
Wet or Dry waste?
How do you identify what goes into the wet waste bin and what goes into the dry waste bin? It’s pretty simple really.
Wet waste is all the kitchen waste that we produce. This can include vegetable peels, used tea, fruits, leftovers, etc. These are basically biodegradable organic waste that can also be composted.
Dry waste comprises of things like paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, Styrofoam, rubber, metal, food packaging material, etc. Even milk cartons and packets go into a dry waste bin. But, one must rinse and dry these before you put them in the bin. Make sure whatever dry waste you discard is actually dry. Soiled packaging waste in this bin is a big no. It only takes a few seconds to rinse out milk and food residues. For things like pizza cardboard box that you cannot rinse, use a wet cloth to wipe and clean. If you don’t do it, it will stink and attract insects and cannot be recycled easily. It’s a habit one needs to cultivate. It might seem annoying at first but then it will come to you naturally. Do your bit for mother earth.
Dry waste is recyclable but will be rejected if it is contaminated or soiled. Wet waste is used for composting. Segregation of wet and dry waste is important because dry waste needs to be uncontaminated for it to be recycled.
Sanitary waste
Sanitary napkins, hair, nails, condoms, anything with bodily fluids, etc. should be wrapped in a newspaper and marked with a red cross. You can use a sketch or ink pen, and hand it over to waste collectors.
Why should you do it?
Why not? We generate approximately 36.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste in India annually. This is later dumped into landfills which wreaks havoc on the environment, and can also reach your food. We must reduce waste and contribute to composting and recycling. The best way to segregate waste is at home even before it reaches the appointed garbage collectors. Imagine the difficulties garbage workers face when we carelessly dump all our waste and they must sort it manually fishing through stinking waste. Be considerate of your fellow human beings and the planet.
Try and reuse plastic bags as much as you can. Carry bags for your purchases to the market. Invest in reusable vegetable bags to easily store your veggies. You can also carry them to the market and ask the vendor to put your purchase in the bag directly instead of a polythene packet. Avoid single use plastics as much as you can. Carry a mug/ bottle at all times. Avoid buying single use water bottles. There is a climate emergency, we must pay attention for the sake of our own well-being and that of our children’s. Mountain of Dishes
Though doing the dishes sounds like an impossible task a lot of us find that it is extremely therapeutic. You fall into a soothing rhythmic trance of scrubbing and rinsing. It is a satisfying task that leaves you feeling accomplished and ready to take on the world. One way to make your WFH life easier is to rinse the utensils immediately after use or perhaps even washing them as soon as you’re done using.
Sweeping & Mopping
Most of us have finally indulged in long overdue exercise regimens under lockdown. Sweeping and mopping is a great exercise but can be quite a tiresome task. Try sweeping every other day and mopping only as required. Choose high traffic spots you and your family frequent to clean often. Use assigned footwear for bathrooms; this will vastly help maintain clean floors.
Chore Time
Depending on how your work day goes, choose the right window to finish your chores. If you feel too tired in the evenings, finish your chores before you start working. If you’re a late riser who prefers evenings for productive work, schedule your chores accordingly. You can also squeeze in chores between work hours to take effective breaks and keep work monotony at bay. This will also help you move around. Without an office environment it is easy to stay seated all day without realising you haven’t moved much at all.
Divide & Conquer
Share the load with all family members. Assign tasks and responsibilities among family members and rotate tasks every few days. The responsibility of making and keeping a home are not the burden of the women in the household to shoulder alone. Apart from being a fair practise, sharing the load can also help us be more thoughtful and become well rounded adults. It hones our survivor skills and independence. It adds more to our lives than we care to admit. Give the kids tasks too. A family that cooks and cleans together grows together.
Put it away
Engage in the habit of immediately putting things away in the right place. Make your bed just after you wake up, fold and cupboard as soon as the laundry dries; put away spices and condiments immediately after use, basically put everything away as soon as you’re done using it. It will save you a lot of cleaning up later. A great way to go about keeping a neat house is how you maintain it on an everyday basis. Try and try until you succeed.
In the end it’s your attitude towards chores that helps you the most. If you’re annoyed and overwhelmed by all the things you need to do, you’re just going to be unhappy.
