With the month of October comes the excitement of festivals! From Dussehra, Diwali and Bihu to Eid, Christmas and New Year, we wait for this quarter of the year with utmost enthusiasm. It is that time of the year where we meet our loved ones and exchange gifts, enjoy an assortment of delicacies and pray for the good health and wealth of each other.

Along with gifts and delicious food comes the tradition of decorating your home and working space. People invest huge amounts in flowers, candles, lights, colours, gifts and more. While purchasing is always an option, how about you try some DIY this year and save those extra bucks? Here are some cool festive décor DIY ideas to try with your family and create a unique décor game this festive season:

Diya

We are sure you buy dozens of earthen diyas to light up your home and office every Diwali along with at least 3-4 special designed diyas for the special spaces, right? This year, create your own with some amazing festive décor ideas! Get a set of fabric colours containing the primary colours and a paintbrush. Colour the diyas on your own and use other natural items for the decoration such as rice paste, orange lentil, black sesame seeds etc.

Light Strings

Pull out the light strings from the previous year and bring in some colourful tapes. Cut out small pieces of the different tapes and start sticking them around the small light to create the string light of your choice of colour. This DIY idea goes best with the usual yellow lights.

Floral Decor

With a variety of flower types available, you can create different floral festive décor items. For instance, create a long floral string with marigold flowers and tie a big knot on both ends so that the flowers do not fall off. Next, start making a circle with the string one above the other. You can place such in sets in corners or solo. To add more grace to this, carefully place scented candles inside the circles. You can also mix to create circles from different flowers.

Reuse Old Containers

Bring out the waste containers/jars of cosmetics, food and more that you have been collecting or storing. Paint each of these jars in different colours. Add glitters to some and a quick dash of contrast coloured paints to some. You’ll have a collection of containers in different sizes and shapes that can now be used as candle holders, nut containers, flower holders, Diya stand and much more.

Old Colourful Fabrics

If you have some fabrics that you do not wish to use anymore such as a colourful dupatta, designed Kurtis or a cotton saree, it’s time you get them out. These pieces can be used to hang flowers or other décor stuff at the entrance, or any room. You can twist the colourful fabrics to create a shape of your choice and go creative. If you have only plain fabric, worry not! Add some colours to it and bring out the creative you this festive season.
